Here is my most recent project, courtesy of my friend Ashley:
When completed, the box will be decked out with the theme of individual Liberty. It is a message that is desperately needed in the Atlanta urban community.
This is a unique opportunity for me to have work placed in a public venue. I am also enjoying the opportunity to work in a new medium. I will be making stencils soon for applying the layers of imagery with spray paint, then adding details with markers.
In a funny aside, I was carded at the Home Depot when I purchased the paints for this project. Apparently, the government officials in my county think they will prevent graffiti by limiting the number of spray paint cans you can purchase without showing ID. I wonder if they really think teenage punks will be deterred by that minor inconvenience.
Press Release:
ART BOX pARTy, hosted at dooGallery, Saturday June 23rd (First Saturday of the summer), off Memorial Drive in Atlanta.
Ashley Norfleet and Han Vance are excited to invite a select group of local artists to create original works of art utilizing recycled newspaper distribution boxes as the canvas. These works of art will later be utilized on the streets of urban Atlanta for Atlanta INtown Paper distribution, and may be displayed in festivals and even chosen for auction. As artists, we admire your talents and would like to share your unique vision with our beloved city of Atlanta! Atlanta INtown Paper is a free progressive monthly periodical with a print run of 47,000 copies and a strong online presence. Han Vance and his citizens group (CFPP – Citizens For Ponce Progress) decided to remove old junk boxes left as blight from the greater Ponce Corridor area and to recycle them as Atlanta INtown Paper boxes. This event will feature the box art and some of the top spoken word poets in the fabled Atlanta urban poetry scene set to perform, DJ, booze and popular food trucks. Print media and online coverage will be strong. You may use this box and this event as a way of self promotion – paint anything you wish, apart from images that may be offensive or construed as profanity. Many of these will be displayed in public places, please use discretion. Complimentary admission will be granted to all participating artists (free drinks).
Atlanta INtown Paper box dimensions: 4 ft high, by 2 and a quarter ft deep, by 2 ft across the front, ~100 lbs.
Date of show: 6/23/12
Proceeds of the show after paying for all operating costs will be donated to support the continuation of great shows at dooGallery.
Looking forward to seeing what you will create!
