The future of healthcare

This is an excerpt from The Light of Day. It should be available by Christmas.

The splint Ryan had rigged to immobilize Jeff’s hand was only a temporary measure. The designated field medic would have a splint and a fresh wrap. If Jeff was lucky, he might get some sort of pain killer before the medic attempted to force his disjointed carpals back into place. When they returned to The Underground he would be placed on the waiting list, but the possibility of him seeing a medical professional before his hand healed was slim. Disjointed wrists were not life threatening and were therefore put at the end of a very long list. A list that was serviced by a few very over worked individuals.

Jeff remembered when he was younger and he had the flu, his family followed the standard quarantine procedures, placing bio filters over all the community air ducts and his bedroom door, and finally contacting the Office of Medicine. Jeff roasted in his room for three days, suffering through cold sweats, mild hallucinations, and diarrhea that threatened to burst his bowels and left his mouth dry. On the fourth day his fever broke and by the sixth day he was running through the halls playing hide and seek with his friends, a testament to the resiliency of children. Three weeks later the receptionist at the Office of Medicine called to inform them that Jeff had an appointment scheduled for the following week. The appointment had been confirmed and could not be broken.

Keep your laws off my body

You know what pisses me off about mandatory health insurance. If instituted, you are going to be charged for simply being alive. No person will be free, literally. Some politicians liken mandatory health insurance to mandatory auto insurance, but I don’t have to drive a car. I have a choice. It’s my life and if I don’t want to insure myself then that is my business. Keep you laws off my body – wait haven’t I heard that somewhere before?

I’m sorry for all the political posts lately. I promise I will get back to slacking as soon as the statists stop trying to steal my money and run my life.

Oh, by the way I have been fully insured for the past 11 years. After I graduated college, I passed up a job with a gourmet chef to work at Outback so that I could be insured. We all make choices and we should suffer the consequences or reap the rewards accordingly.

The Vast Right Wing Sentiment

A few days ago Bill Clinton was asked about the “vast right wing conspiracy”. Slick Willie said the conspiracy is alive and kickin’.

I only have one question. How vast does a conspiracy have to be before it’s just popular sentiment.

I’m tired

I was born, raised, and educated in The South. Lived here my whole life. I know I’m repeating myself.

Jimmy Carter and Maureen Dowd and Hank Johnson reveal more about themselves than about others. None of these people who claim that the opponents to Barack Obama’s policies has offered any direct evidence of racism. Joe Wilson may be a racist .I don’t know. I’ve never met the man, but the phrase “you lie” is not inherently racist, and he did not say “you lie boy”. That was in Maureen Dowd’s head. Maybe she needs to ask some probing questions of herself.

I’m white, I’m Southern, I believe Barack Obama is a Marxist, and I oppose most of his policies. I am not a racist. I am not a bigot. My best friend growing up, Johnathan Freemont, was black. I assume he still is, I just haven’t seen him in years. In high school one of my friends lived with me at my parents house for a year, also black. I have many coworkers who are black that I have worked with for years, whom I like very much. I don’t have any black friends currently, but I only have two friends.

I’m tired of being called a racist. I know if I confronted these people they would say “Oh, I don’t mean you, and that’s the problem. They don’t say who they do mean. These people are the ones causing race problems in this country.

I’m tired of Jimmy Carter. I’m a Georgian and the man has embarrassed us for far to long. Can’t he just go back to Plains and retire?

Solidarity

The fall of the Soviet Union, and along with it murder, tyrrany, oppression, slavery to the state, began in Poland. Solidarity. The Communists couldn’t break those determined individuals. Not even eighteen months of martial law could stop the movement. Bishop, Arch Bishop Wojtyła of Krakow gave the Polish people the courage to stand up to the Soviet’s. Later after he ascended to the Papacy Pope John Paul told the the people of Poland in Warsaw “Let Thy Spirit descend and renew the face of the land! This land!”. and the Soviets couldn’t stop him. The polish people did this for themselves and in turn for the world. Today, September 17 2009, on the Seventieth anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland, the president of the United States scrapped plans for a missle shield for Poland. Russia led by former Soviet KGB oficial Vladimir Putin, rejoiced.

I don’t if it’s coincidence that the U.S. met with Poland to inform them of our decision on this dreadful anniversary. If it is coincidence then the President or the State department needs to immediately and publicly apologize to the people of Poland. If it’s not a coincidence then God help us all.

I can’t force a Presidential or State apology, but I can apologize as an American citizen. To all the People of Poland, I am Sorry.

I expect the Cuban embargo to be lifted on January 1.

Sexy I’m Not

The Boy lost his first tooth yesterday, and I wanted to get him something special, instead of just dropping a quarter under his pillow. So I went out today and and got him a 1964 Kennedy half dollar. Now ,1964 is special because it’s the last year that the U.S minted coins for circulation using silver.

Fiat currency versus metals standards versus specie is not a sexy subject for most people. However, a great deal of the financial and political problems that we have today have their roots in the federal government’s abandonment of the gold standard. One of the original reasons for printing paper money instead of coining hard currency in gold or silver was portability, a pocket full of paper weighs a lot less than a pocket full of Gold Double Eagles, but this is no longer an issue. Most of our transactions are electronic. It’s as easy to transfer metal electronically as it is paper. Politicians can’t just up and mint a trillion dollars in gold coins to ”stimulate” the economy, and therein lies the problem.

In my book, The Light of Day, precious metals become the standard currency, as societies are rebuilt after the world’s governments move everyone underground to save the environment.

Yeah, I’m not sexy.

I Hate Politics

I’ve said it before. I hate politics. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not disinterested. I hate politics. I am disgusted that I have to worry about some grinning sneak thief public servant using the police power of government pick my pocket, to restrict my liberty. But like a toothache I’ve become accustomed to the machinations of these people and I am able to ignore it. However, a line has been crossed. I have two reasons for living. One is asleep in his bed, he’s safe. I spent all day with him. I hugged and kissed him. I laughed with him. The other is in Washington DC, or Maryland, or Virginia, or some goddamned place that isn’t here. She’s been there for three days and won’t be back for another. I have talked to her only briefly. I haven’t hugged or kissed her. Because of the brevity of her phone calls we haven’t laughed together.

Don’t get me wrong I understand why she went. Our government has all but burned our Constitution. And what little I have talked to her she has sounded like she’s having a great time. I’m not a petty or jealous person, but damn it, I’m not with her. I blame every political hack in washington DC. Every damn one. Leave the citizens of this country alone. Americans are good people. We don’t want to be socially engineered. Our creator engineered us properly and  we derive our rights from him.We don’t need you to tell us what to do, or what’s best for us. We don’t need you to manage our households. That’s what wives and mothers are for, and this home is without ours. I just want her home.

I Have a New Favorite Band

Truckstop Honeymoon. I was listening to my Rockabilly – Roots station on Pandora and Rockabilly Debutante came on. I proceeded to check out their website, where they have several sample songs available. Check these guys out. They’re a husband and wife duo and they play rockabilly,  root rock, blue grass, country, swing. All the good things of Appalachia and the Bayou mixed up, stewed up, and bubbling up all sweet and gravelly.

Someone has an Asshole

The local radio station reported that someone had an opinion about something. That’s like reporting that someone has an asshole.

This morning, 08/13/2009, there was a news report on your radio station concerning a former insurance executive. You reported that Wendell Porter believes that the insurance industry is behind the current healthcare protests. Mr. Porter is a former insurace executive, but he is also currently employed by The Center for Media and Democracy. You did report this fact, but you left out that it is a progressive left wing think tank.

Reporting that someone has an opinion about something is not journalism. Everyone has an opinion. As jounalists and as a news orginization it is your job to verify or debunk the claims of Mr. Porter. If his claims are true, and you gave no evidence that they are, that is news. If he is lying and the Center for Media and Democracy is intentionally defaming the people protesting the healthcare plan, that is news. But to report Mr Porters opinion as if it is fact is shameful. I expect better from your radio station.

In the interest of disclosure my wife has protested the healthcare bill and she has never been in contact with any insurance company.

Thanks for your time,
James Byrd

Rest In Peace

Buell is no longer going to manufacture the Blast. I liked the Blast, the only time I rode one was during my Riders Edge course, so I never went over 20 MPH, but it was a fun bike. Erik Buell said that the reason they are discontinuing the Blast is because it isn’t wasn’t a sportbike, but that’s why I liked the Blast. It didn’t have any pretensions, it wasn’t trying to be a sport bike, a cruiser, or a street fighter. It wasn’t dripping with chrome and it didn’t crank out 100 HP. It was just a bike. Maybe some manufacturer will step in and give us a true standard, until then rest in peace.
