Description:

I have decided to try something new and see where it takes me. This drawing is the beginning of a series I have been planning for a while. The concept is to do a series of small drawings of American iconography. My plan is to have a central theme, such as Liberty, on a graphic background. I'm currently working on a dollar sign, and have plans for eagles, flags, and other images that symbolize America.

Before I started this drawing, I had forgotten how much I enjoy the medium of pencil. I love working with pencil for several reasons. The contrast you can achieve is the main reason. Also, you can't get a sharp line with paint very easily, like you can with pencil. Somethimes it's nice to do something that doesn't require much thought or long hours at the easel. I typically spend so much time researching the subjects of my paintings, it is nice to create the likeness of something I already know about. Drawing has a soothing effect that painting lacks for me. When I paint, I'm usually trying to vent an emotion or frustration. It is very cathartic because I tend to pace around the canvas and dance or gesture. Of course that has as much to do with the loud music I listen to, but it's hard for me to paint in a quiet room. Drawing seems to be a much more relaxing endeavor for me.

I also feel a need to do some positive work. As much as I feel inspired to mock and criticize the government, it doesn't appeal to everyone, nor does it make for inspiring imagery. I often worry that I run the risk of being constantly negative, which is not my intention. I feel a need to nurture the patriotic aspect of my personality, so this project will encourage those ideas. It is also leading up to several other series of small works I have planned. I recently completed research that will allow me to begin small drawings and paintings on the writings of Ayn Rand. The other project is for a Libertarian alphabet, with each letter determining the theme of the painting. An example would be C, for the Constitution.
