Description:

This painting serves a dual purpose. It is a tribute to the Statue of Liberty and all she symbolizes. It is also a commentary on the way that we have deviated from the kind of society that was the inspiration for her creation. Though our country was founded on the principles of freedom and self-reliance, we have grown dependant and complacent. The modern American wants no part of freedom that requires personal responsibility and independence.

Our society has turned instead to the government for its needs and is developing a personality of dependence and entitlement. We have become enablers to the power-hungry and the corrupt in our society. Even worse, we have made life-long politicians of many of these scoundrels, placing them in a position to make our lives worse under the pretense of the common good. They achieve their goals through regulation and entitlement programs, making us think they’re looking out for us. We are being led to believe that the government knows best: for our health care, retirement, personal behavior, beliefs, our speech and the education of our children.

The more we depend on the government for these things, the more we relinquish our personal freedoms. The more decisions will be made for us, and the less we will have control of our own lives.
