This poster is part of the Obama series. It is a reference to the Hitler Youth program which ‘was originally established in 1922 as the Jungsturm Adolf Hitler…it served to train and recruit future members of the…adult paramilitary wing of the...German Nazi Party. The HJ was organized into local cells on a community level. Such cells had weekly meetings at which various Nazi doctrines were taught by adult HJ leaders. Regional leaders typically organized rallies and field exercises in which several dozen Hitler Youth cells would participate’. (Wikipedia)
The parallels to Obama’s public service proposals are so clear that I need only provide the text from his Blueprint for Change as defense of the point: “Your own story and the American story are not separate – they are shared. And they will both be enriched if we stand up together, and answer a new call to service to meet the challenges of our new century…I won’t just ask for your vote as a candidate; I will ask for your service and your active citizenship when I am president of the United States. This will not be a call issued in one speech or program; this will be a cause of my presidency.”
Ask All Americans to Work Together to Meet Our Common Challenges
Obama will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots and double the Peace Corps and dedicate these positions to addressing America’s common challenges. He also will provide new service opportunities for working Americans and retirees.
Expand Service Learning
Obama will integrate service-learning into our schools to enable students to graduate college with as many as 17 weeks of service experience.
Bolster the Nonprofit Sector
By leveraging federal dollars, Obama will foster the use of best practices of the private sector to nurture innovation in the nonprofit sector.
There is nothing I can say to express the level of contempt I hold for this program. It is not enough for Obama to tax people’s earnings. He also sees fit to lay claim to our time and our children’s time. In an Obama administration, our lives will no longer be our own. We will be at the mercy of big brother’s whims.
